How did you get into casting?
I studied journalism and did my internship at a production company. It led to my first job on “Drifters” by Peter Grönlund and I have been in casting ever since – I have not finished my studies.. yet!
Tell us a little about how the job of the casting director is perceived in Sweden.
It depends on the director and project: some are really open and give you complete trust, and some have many thoughts already. I have had the luxury of working mostly with directors who also write the script, which I think is really nice since there are no other opinions and they own the story completely, which gives me a lot of freedom.
What made you decide to be part of this year’s jury for the International Screen Acting Workshop
e-TALENTA scholarship?
I always want to discover new talent, since I also work outside of Sweden. Latest feature coming 2022 is „Triangle of Sadness“ by Ruben Östlund, for which we went to Berlin among many other places and countries and worked with (fellow casting director) Nina Haun to find actors from Germany. I was really impressed by all German actors we met and also the lovely accent in English.
What was your first impression of this year’s ISAW submissions? And has that impression changed?
It was really strong. Many strong candidates. The only thought I had afterwards was that I felt that there could have been a wider mix of ethnicities among the candidates.
You were nominated for the European Casting Award at the Locarno Film Festival for „Drifters“ in 2016. How important is it for festivals to recognise Casting Directors?
Very much I feel, I think it’s really strange that there usually is no category for Casting Directors. I really don’t know why.
And finally, what would you like the actors and actresses reading this interview to know?
To always do research before coming to a casting, even if you know the lines. It really shows if you have done your research into who your character is. And to not over-think how the character acts before meeting with the Casting Director or Director 🙂
